The following explanatory notes will be helpful in understanding the requirements of the Tech Prep Credential:

General Comments:

The Tech Prep Credential can be viewed as part of the Career Development activities currently underway in Alberta schools. (eg.Teacher Advisor, Health, Career and Life Management, Career Directions, Career Resource Corners, Off-Campus Education and Career Fairs).

An important criteria in developing the Tech Prep credential is to allow enough flexibility for any school in Alberta to offer the program . As outlined, individual schools will determine how to deliver the program within the resources they have available in their schools, electronically or in their community.

Credential

A major objective of Tech Prep is to encourage students to select a goal-oriented high school program that provides them with the academic and employability skills expected by the business/industry community.

Achieving the Credential will give students the course requirements needed for entry into many post secondary certificate and diploma programs. Some post secondary programs may have additional requirements (e.g. Biology 30 - NAIT Biological Technologies Program), which would also have to be met.

Academic Courses

It is important to note that the course level is the minimum requirement for the Tech Prep Credential. Students should be encouraged to take courses according to their abilities (e.g. Applied or Pure Math 20 meets the Tech Prep math requirements, but may not meet all post-secondary requirements).

Students are encouraged to choose the Science program most appropriate to their career cluster. It should be noted that Science 20 is an acceptable Science. Science 24 would not meet the science requirements of the Tech Prep Credential.

Information Technologies: ( I.C.T.)

The students will demonstrate competencies in introductory word processing, database, and spreadsheet.

Career and Technology Studies and other Related Courses

CTS courses have been listed using Alberta Learning strand names. Schools will identify which strands and courses are available in that school.

Where particular strands are not offered in a school, they may be delivered through Off-Campus Programs or electronically.

Student will select a designated Career Cluster, and then select a minimum of 10 credits from courses within their selected cluster.

Remaining credits may be selected from outside designated cluster and, on principal's approval, may include other high school and locally developed courses.

In addition to the introductory modules from Career Transitions, schools are encouraged to include intermediate and advanced courses as they relate to the student's career cluster.

Off-Campus Education

A minimum of 200 hours of Off-campus Education must be completed through Work Experience 15, 25, 35, Green Certificate, Registered Apprenticeship Program, Internship or Canadian Forces.

Career Transitions 1010 - Job Preparation, is an Alberta Learning Off-Campus Education requirement.

Personal and Job Safety

The need for a Standard First-Aid Certificate which includes Level A-CPR in all Career Clusters has been identified as a credential requirement. This may be delivered through existing courses, eg Physical Education 30, Community Health 2120, or delivered to students through community or school extension programs.

Career Transitions 1210 which is a personal safety management course is also a Tech Prep credential requirement. This course helps students develop practical personal safety-related knowledge, skills and attitudes. Students may also take CTR 2210 and CTR 3210. Students who achieve 70% or higher are eligible for a credential issued by the Alberta Job Safety Skills Society.

Career Portfolio

The student will complete a Tech Prep Career Portfolio building on the Conference Board of Canada's Employability Skills 2000+. The Career Portfolio will include information such as Employability Skills Assessments, Resumes, Letters of Reference, Career Trackers, Career Inventories, Best Work Samples, Employer Evaluations, High School Transcripts, and Attendance Records. A Graduate Skills Presentation is a requirement of the credential.

Locally Developed Courses

Locally developed courses can be included within a designated Career Cluster.
