ACE Network Incorporates as a Not for Profit Society

A new legal entity – Alberta Career Education Network Foundation has been established to take over the current and emergent needs of the Alberta Career Prep Consortium.

The application to create the new society was submitted with the following objects listed as the reasons for Alberta Career Education Network incorporation:

•    To advance the career education of all Alberta youth and promote career development that meaningfully integrates learning, life and work.
•    To foster career education and development through research and the practical application of research-based career education practices in schools and through other educational organizations and facilities.
•    To provide for the training and education of all who share an interest in and will benefit from improved career education and development.
•    To provide a vehicle that facilitates communication and collaboration and the sharing of effective practices amongst all who share an interest in career education and development for youth.
•    To encourage the development of a seamless education, career development and world of work system that arms young people with the knowledge and tools that will be of benefit to both youth and the broader community that we learn and work in.
•    To encourage, foster and develop recognition of the importance of career education in the economy and national life.
•    To acquire, by purchase or otherwise, all of the resources required for carrying on the society’s various objects.
•    To sell, manage, lease, mortgage, dispose of, or otherwise deal with the property of the society.

Board Member Recruitment

On January 31, 2007, at a regular meeting of Alberta Career Prep Consortium, the Steering Committee authorized the creation of a Nominating Committee to recruit members for the new legal entity’s board of directors.  It was agreed by consensus that the Nominating Committee be comprised of the following members:  Dr. Michael Alpern, Ms. Margaret Vennard and Mr. Don Dolan - Chair.

Nominating Committee Update

A Board Member Recruitment Plan for the new Alberta Career Education Network Foundation was developed and utilized by the Nominating Committee to create a recruitment strategy for the new entity's board of directors.

The Nominating Committee approved the following by consensus:

1.    That the committee would follow the recruitment plan developed by management titled: ‘Steps for Recruiting and Orienting Potential Board Members'.

2.    That the board would be comprised of no more than nine members.

3.    That, to ensure broad representation on the board, directors be recruited from the following five constituencies (with the number from each constituency listed in brackets - totalling nine).
  • Education (2)
  • Government (2)
  • Business, Industry and Labour (2)
  • Not for Profit Sector or Community Organizations (2)
  • National or International Organizations or Member at Large (1)

The Board Recruitment Committee (BRC) also analyzed the present composition of the Alberta Career Prep Consortium Steering Committee to identify competencies and experience that should be retained and to determine areas of expertise, background or influence that may be either lacking or oversubscribed.
All BRC members also submitted a list of board member prospects by constituency.

At the last meeting of the Nominating Committee, a board member prospect list was developed and it was agreed that the committee Chair would call on the board member prospects from each constituency and finalize the list of best prospects.

It was also agreed that the new legal entity would continue the tradition and work of the Alberta Career Prep Consortium Steering Committee by augmenting the governance structure - the policy making board of nine directors, with a larger body of career development educators called the Alberta Career Education Network Advisory Council.

The first meetings of the new Advisory Council were held in conjunction with the annual CAREER EDUCATION SUMMIT.  The Council is chaired by Dr. Paul Stewart; the Vice-Chair is Margaret Vennard.

The founding board of directors of the new Alberta Career Education Network Foundation:

  • Mr. Mike Doyle
  • Mr. Dale Gullekson
  • Dr. Kris Magnusson
  • Dr. Sam Shaw
  • Dr. Paul Stewart
  • Mr. Craig Warnock
